Abstract
In an attempt to clarify the radio-protective action of cysteamine on the cellular level, cysteamine (25 mg/1009m body weight) was injected intraperitoneally to albino mouse prior to the whole body x-irradiation with 1,200r.
Non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH) level of the liver was measured at 1, 24 and 48 hours after the irradiation, and a comparison was made with, 1) group which was x-irradiated without prior injection of cysteamine, 2) group which was injected with cysteamine but not x-irradiated, and 3) the normal.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) NP-SH level of x-irradiated group was generally higher than the normal (5.3 p mol/gm wet wt), and at 24 hours post-irradiation, the value was elevated most significantly.
2) When cysteamine alone was injected, NP-SH was almost 3 times that, of the normal.
3) When cysteamine was injected prior to the. x-irradiation, the values of NP-S11 were generally
in the middle of the other groups, i.e. ; the x-irradiated group and the cysteamine injected group,
and the radio-protective action of cysteamine was possibly confirmed from the results.
