Change in Prevalence of Intestinal Helminths by Formalin
Choi Dong-Wik

Lim Geon
Abstract
Quite recently, the prevalence of intestinal helminths among the school children and the general population in Korea has decreased remarkably. Therefore, it is hard to find the intestinal helminth eggs by the mass examination of feces.
In order to clarify the factors related to the reduction of prevalence, the results obtained in the Department of Parasitoloy using the formain-ether sedimentation technique were analyzed statistically for the period from March, 1978 to August, 1980. The prevalence rate of Clonorchis sinensis was the highest, 15.8 per cent, followed by Trichuris trichiura, 12.2 per cent. The rate for Ascaris lumbricoides was unexpectedly low, 3. 8 percent. The prevalence rate Ascaris lumbircoide was higher in females than in males, while the rate for Clonorchis sinensis was higher in males. In three years observation, the rates for Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworms have decreased drastically, compared with those for other helminths by year. And the almost all of helminthic infections were single and double infections.
