Abstract

Local anesthetics block excitability in nerve, muscle and secretory cells by preventing the passive inward movement of sodium ion which initiates the action potential. Beside , local anesthetics interact ¢¥with the cytoskeleton and cation transport ATPase.
These suggest that local anesthetics influence the electrolyte transport in membranes f several- tissues by many ways. The effect of systemic administration of procaine on renal function in rabbits was investigated in this study.
The results were as follows:
1. The administration of procaine (2 mg/kg) decreased urine volume, clearance of osmo- larity and the excretion rates of sodium and chloride significantly, but did not change systemic and renal hemodynamics and the excretion rate of- potassium.
2. The pretreatment of procaine (2 mg/kg) did not alter significantly the diuretic acticn of furosemide (1 mg/kg) in comparison with the administration of furosemide(1 mg/kg) only until 20 minutes, but enhance the diuretic action of furosemide (1 mg/kg) slightly thereafter.
These results show that procaine has the antidiuretic effect in rabbits.
