Clinical Effects of Pefloxacin on Intraabdominal Septic Conditions

Johnson, Kit. G.
Abstract
We evaluated the therapeutic effect and safety of Pefloxacin in 53 cases of intraabdominal septic conditions. The clinical therapeutic efficacy was 93% (27 cases) for acute appendicitis, 94% (16 cases) for severe biliary tract infection, 100% (8 cases) for panperitonitis due to hollow viscus rupture and 50% (2 cases) for postoperative intra-abdominal abscess. So the overall efficacy rate of Pefloxacin was 92%. The sensitivity of Pefloxacin were 100% in E. coli, Staphylococcus species, Klebsiella species, and Pseudomonas species, but it was somewhat lower in Enterococcus (80%) and Streptococcus (71%). There were no deleterious effect on peripheral blood count, liver and renal function test with Pefloxacin treatment. 27 patients (33.8%) showed erythematous skin reaction on sensitivity test and these findings were interpreted as an irritant reactions of Pefloxacin.
The side effects of the Pefloxacin were observed in .4 cases (7.5%): 2 diarrheas, a chest tightness and dizziness, itching erythematous skin reaction. These side effects were disappeared spontaneously with ceasation of treatment.
These results demonstrated that the Pefloxacin can be used effectively in the treatment of severe in
traabdominal inflammatory disease.
