Cytomegalovirus Inclusion Disease associated with Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia

Abstract
Authors report an autopsy case of cytomegalovirus inclusion disease associated with pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in male premature baby.
This premature baby was died 12 hours after birth. The specific history during pregnancy or congenital defects were absent. Its lung shows patch pneumonic consolidation and marked edema. Other organs had no specific change except marked edema and congestion. The microscopic observation of the lung :issue
revealed many cytomegaloinclusions in cytoplasms of alveolar lining epithelial cells and foamy material in the alveolar lumens, which was confirmed as cysts of pneumocystis carninii by silver-methenamine stain. The inclusions were demonstrated well in duct lining epithelial cells of submandibular salivary glands is and proximal tubular epithelial cells of kidney.
On electronmicroscopic observation of the lung tissue, oval to round shaped virus were identified in inclusion, measuring 100nm in diameter average. The cysts of pneumocystis carinii were also identified, which were boat or cup shaped, measuring 5-6¥ìm of long distance and 0.6¥ìm of short distance. They had thick fibrous capsules.
