A Endoscopic Review of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Abstract
A total of 189 cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding were endoscopic reviewed who were admitted to Jung Eup Hospital during 1 year period from June 1990 to May 1991. The following results were obtained
1) The sex and age incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding revealed a greater prevalence in male. with a ratio 6.3 male to 1 female and peak incidence was in 6th decades(34.4%).
2) The seasonal distribution showed the peak prevalence in spring(31.7%)
3) The alcohol and smoking incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding revealed to alcohol in 10.1%, smoking in 9.0%, and combination of alcohol and smoking in 63.5%, no alcohol and smoking 17.4% of the cases.
4) The causative disease of upper gastrointesinal bleeding were Gastric ulcer 59 cases(31.2%), Esophageal varix 49 cases(20.1%), Duodenal ulcer 20 cases(10.6%), Mallory-Weiss syndrome 10 cases(5.3%), Gastric cancer 4 cases(2.1%), Gastric polyp 3 cases(1.6%), unditermined 6 cases(3.2%).
5) The mode of upper gastrointestinal bleeding consist of Hematemesis in 16.9%, Melena in 43.9%, and combination of Hematemesis and Melena in 39.2% of the cases.
6) The time of endoscopic examination was performed 101 cases within 24 hours.
