The Efficacy of Terbinafine in the Treatment of Onychomycosis and Coincidentally Superficial Fungal Infections

Park Soo-An
Abstract
We studied the efficacy and tolerability of oral terbinafine in 20 patients who had onychomycosis of the toenails and coincidentally superificial fungal infections at the other sites of the body, clinically and mycologically proven.
Of 20 patients, 15 patients showed onychomycosis of the toenails and tinea pedis, and Trichophyton rubrum was the most common organism on the mycological study.
The mycological cure rate for onychomycosis of toenails was 75% at the end of treatment and 90% at the follow-up investigation.
Tinea pedis showed 85% and .100% mycological cure rate 4 weeks and 8 weeks after initiation of treatment, respectively. And tinea cruris showed 100% mycological cure rate within 4 weeks of therapy. Four of 20 patients complained of mild gastrointestinal disturbances and headache during treatment, but it was not severe enough to interrupt the administration of terbinafine.
Conclusively, our results suggest that oral terbinafine can be used effectively in the treatment of superficial fungal infection.
