The Efficacy of Sacroiliac Index by Quantative Bone Scan in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Abstract
Ankylosing spondylitis(AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease, and hallmarks of AS are sacroilitis and spondylitis. There are no definite diagnostic method of ankylosing spondylitis.
In the diagnosis of AS, clinical history and radio logic evidence are essential, and it is very hard to detect the early stage of AS with radio logic finding and other diagnostic methods. So there are many trials of early diagnostic screening test for AS. Some authors reported the clinical significance of sacroiliac index value measured by quantitative bone scan(QBS) in detecting early stage of AS. So we studied the effectiveness of SI index in screening 11 AS patients who diagnosed as AS by New York criteria, and with the 7 normal controls. In the results, mean ¡¾SD of AS patients were 1.30¡¾ 0.1 l(Rt), 1.38¡¾0.13(Lt) and the control¢¥s were 1.10¡¾0.08, 1.06¡¾0.12(P<0.05, respectively). As a results, if the SI index is greater than 1.3, the sensitivity is above 73%. In the conclusion of this study, we found out that SI index may be an effective early diagnostic screening test for AS.
