Superoxide Level Change during Whole Body Radiation by IR Radiator in Clinics

Abstract
The superoxide level in patients with cancer is much higher than other disease. In order to control this toxic free radical in the blood, the treatment modalities such as Vitamins, Bio-flavonoid and more recently, SOD-therapy are recommended. Only little success has been obtained in this patient category after these treatments in clinics. In select-ed cases, whole body radiation using IR radiator has been offered and to see what this is of any benefit in superoxide level control in clinics.
Material and Methods : Between Nov. 1999 and Dec. 2000, we have analyzed 32 patients of superoxide level change in the blood during the whole body irradiation for the cancer patients in St. Mary¢¥s hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea. We used the chemilunescence method for monitoring superoxide level in blood. Whole body far-infrared radiator (general and local radiator type, Shindong Enercom Inc. Seoul, Korea, Infra Life Technology, Tashkent, Uzbekistan) as whole body radiation device was used. Patients were received whole body radiation daily (50 min heating, 5 times a week). All patients were treated 10 times more.
Results : In the group who received the whole body irradiation for the control of radia-tion dermatitis and cancer pain, the superoxide level was decreased down to level of before heating. The superoxide level in patients who received whole body irradiation for the radia-tion dermatitis decreased down to 80% level of before heating. In the group who received whole body irradiation for the pain control, the superoxide level was decreased down to about the half level after whole body treatment.
Conclusion : In our short experience with whole body heating technique using IR radia-tion, this modality showed its efficiency as the eliminator of superoxide in clinics.
