Studies on the 5¢¥-Nucleotidase of the Human Placenta

Abstract
The plasma membrane bound 5¢¥-Nucleotidase of the human placenta was investigated in relation to the placental age.
The results were as follows:.
1. Inhibitory effect of con-A on the early plecental 5¢¥-Nucleotidase increased proporti¡þonately from 5ag to 20pg and was reversed by D-Mannose and D-Glucose but not by D-Galactose, L-arabinose and D-xylose.
2. Ribomononucleotides were preferable substrates for the 5¢¥-Nucleotidase to deoxyribo mononucleotides.
3. The placental 5¢¥-Nucleotidase was heat stable equally in all placeutal ages
4. Activity of the placental 5¢¥-Nucleotidase did not change with placental age while that of nonspecific phosphatase was increased with the placental age.
5. Mn 2* was required for maximal activity of the placental 5¢¥-Nucleotidase among the four ions(Mn2¢¥, C02+, Ca 2+, Mg`+. )
