The Efficacy of Trimetazidine in the Treatment of Tinnitus

Abstract
Tinnitus is one of the most common complaints in the practice of otolaryngology. But subjective nature of this symptom does not facilitate either assessment or treatment. Although the pathophysiologic mechanisms responsible for tinnitus remain
poorly
defined, ischemia of the cochleovestibular system seems to play a major role in the pathogenesis.
It has been known that trimetazidine, a cellular antiischemic, activates the ATPase system and corrects all the cellular disturbances induced by the ischemia of the cochleovestibular system.
So we studied to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of trimetazidine in patients with tinnitus.
After 60days of treatment, the intensity of tinnitus was improved in 52.4% and the frequency was improved in 47.6% of subjects. The mean score of severity decreased from 2.29 to 1.43 for intensity and from 3.38 to 2.19 for their frequency, Side
effect
was unremarkable.
It is suggested that trimetazidine may be a effective drug in the treatment of tinnitus of ischemic origin.
