THE SECONDARY BONE GRAFTING OF ANTERIOR RESIDUAL BONE DEFECTS IN PATIENTS WITH CLEFT, ALVEOLUS AND PALATE

Abstract
The aim of this study was to re-evaluate the treatment results after secondary autogenous bone grafting for reconstruction of alveolar celfts.
The various indications for, and aims of the procedure, are enumerated.
And, the results of secondary or late secondary bone-grafting procedures in 3 unilateral cleft lip and palate patients are reported.
The conclusion are as follows :
1. Secondary closure of alveolar defects with bone grafting is generally reported to provide better results than early grafting.
2. Bone graft to the residual cleft area should be placed before eruption of the permanent canine to maximize the periodontal benefits.
3. The advangates of bone grafting are to close the persistent oro-nasal fistulas, to perovide the bony support for unerupted teeth and teeth adjacent to the cleft, to construct the continuous alveolar ridges, to stabilize the mobile premaxilla, to aid support of the afar base and nasolabial contour.
4. Autogenous bone appears to by far the best graft material.
