Abstract
The present study investigated toilet signs for elders with dementia. The data were collected in 26 facilities located in Seoul, Incheon and Kyunggido through taking pictures and direct measures of toilet signs and staff interview. Of those 26 facilities, 73.1% were using both letters and figures in toilet signs. The proportion of inadequate value contrast was 26.1% out of 69 toilet signs. Only 8.2% of those 61 figures in the signs represented function of toilet. Regarding figures and letters in toilet signs, 65-67% of the signs were highly standardized in terms of adopting international toilet symbols and common letters in signs. In general, ¡°ÈÀå½Ç¡± was adopted in the signs, while English letters appeared in five facilities. Only 28.7% of the 73 signs were satisfying the conditions of safety and no shine. About half of the signs were attached from the floor beyond the height between 1.2m to 1.6m. In general, staff members did not fully recognize the inadequacy of toilet signs in the facilities. We need further studies of figures, letters and size of toilet signs, which Korean elders with dementia can easily recognize.
