The Effect of Sense of Coherence on the Depression: The Mediating Effect and the Moderating Effect

Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the mediating and moderating effects of the sense of coherence on the relationship between the elderly¡¯s stress and depression. The research participants were 288 elderly in Pusan and the measurement scales used were CES-D scale, Orientation to Life Questionnaire, the Social Readjustment rating scale. This study utilized t-test, one way ANOVA, and Structural Equation Model for the data analysis. The results of the research were as follow. First, it was found the sense of coherence was significant the higher level of the education or economic status, group with spouse. Second, depression was negatively related with stress when it was to the simple model without mediating factor. However, with the sense of coherence included in the models as mediating factor, the stress influenced the sense of coherence, and this influenced on the depression. Third, the moderating effects of the sense of coherence in the relation to the stress and depression was not significant. The implication and limitations of the study were discussed along with some suggestion for future researches and practices.
