Health Status and Associated Factors of Depression according to Depression in Elderly Women

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate health status and associated factors of depression according to depression in elderly women living in the community. The subject was 216 elderly women over 65 who lived in the metropolitan area. Descriptive statistics, ¥ö2-test, t-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and hierarchial multiple regression were performed using SPSS/PC windows program. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1) 51.4% of elderly women belonged to depression group. 2) There were statistical differences in ADL, IADL, pain, and hearing impairment of physical health, MMSE of psychological health, and social support of social health between those who experience depression and those who do not. 3) In normal group, MMSE was negatively related to IADL, and hearing impairment positively related to social support. In depression group, IADL was positively related to hearing impairment and MMSE negatively related to ADL, IADL, and hearing impairment. 4) Significant factors influencing on depression were number of chronic disease, pain, and MMSE in depression group. Based on these results, it is necessary to perform more studies on health status and related factors according to depression in elderly living in various settings. Especially, depression prevention program is necessary for high risk elderly group.
