Abstract
This study aims to examine the magnitude and the predictors of caregiving burden among spouse and adult child caregivers of frail elders to understand the differences of them between two groups(spouse and adult child caregivers), and to show the detail interventions to alleviate the burden. We analyzed the data which obtained from 404 primary family caregivers(spouse or adult children) caring the frail elders aged 65 and over who lived in Seoul. This research is utilizing the stress process framework(Pearlin et al., 1990) specialized for the caregiving experience based on the stress and coping model¡¯s focus on the stress process. The results show that spouse caregivers experienced worse in all the areas of caregiving burden than adult child caregivers did. After controlling the variables affecting the burden, there were not significant differences in the level of caregiving burden between spouse and adult child caregivers. And the findings show that the predictors of caregiver burden were different for two groups. The factors were not significant in all the areas of burden for the spouse caregivers, such as elder¡¯s physical disorders, elder¡¯s cognitive impairments, caregiving duration, and social supports, but for the adult children, significant was elder¡¯s cognitive impairments in social and emotional burden, caregiving duration in financial burden, and social supports in financial, social, and emotional burden. This study suggests some important implications on policy for the elderly.
