A Biographical Study on the Lives of the Urban Female Elderly Moved from Rural Areas in Their Later Years for Their Grandchildren`s Nurture
Yang Yeung-Ja

Abstract
The current study aims to reconstruct the respective biographies of the female elderly in their later years who had moved to urban areas from rural districts with a view to nurturing grandchildren from their own perspectives, taking into account how they have attached meanings to their old age and how such a period has been shaped in relation to their earlier years. Data were collected from 7 female elderly, using Schutze¡¯s autobiographical-narrative interview. Interview data were analyzed through the application of Schutze¡¯s autobiographical-narrative interview and Lamnek¡¯s qualitative interview methods. The present research found that ¡°the structure of biographical process¡± turned out to be a developmental process from heteronomous life to autonomous life. In terms of inter- and intra-generational exchange modes, more specifically, it exhibited the following 4 stages: 1) heteronomous life due to an exchange mode of intergenerational inequality prior to marriage; 2) heteronomous married life due to an exchange mode of inter- and intra-generational inequality; 3) a shift to autonomous life due to an exchange mode of intergenerational reciprocity based on moving to urban areas from rural areas; and 4) autonomous old age due to an exchange mode of intergenerational reciprocity. Particularly, this research proved significant in that it drew some practical implications for the shaping of autonomous old age by investigating how heteronomous lives in advance of old age were progressing toward autonomous ones in later years from the perspective of the elderly concerned.
