Social Participation and Subjective Wellbeing of Elderly in Seoul and Chuncheon Area

Abstract
According to the activity theory, participating in social activities is very important for elderly because it supplements the roles which elderly lost. On the basis of the activity theory, the aim of study is to analyze the relationship between social participation and subjective wellbeing of elderly in Seoul and Chuncheon Area. For the analysis, the authors clarify the concept of social participation and classify it into 4 type-religious ritual, leisure, public association, and ascriptive association- in the article. The data used in the study consist of 3 wave panel data. The number of sample is 840 in 1st wave, 822 in 2nd wave, and 836 in 3rd wave. The panel data is analysed with random intercept multi-level analysis. The results are in following. First, participation in social activities have positive effects on subjective wellbeing of elderly. Second, all the types of social participations except participation in religious ritual have positive effects on wellbeing of elderly. These results show that the interaction among the people resulted from the social participation have positive effects on the wellbeing of elderly. However because the participation in religious association has characteristics of individualistic activity rather than social interaction, it failed to show the positive effects on wellbeing of elderly. These results suggest that the program to support the participation of elderly in social activity-especially in public association- should be developed and enhanced for the life of elderly.
