This research investigated the socioeconomic differentials in activity limitations and health behaviors among the elderly Seoul residents, using the 2005 Seoul Citizens¡¯ Health Interview Survey Data. About 10% of study subjects(1,467) reported to have at least one or more troubles in seeing, hearing, speaking or other functions of daily life. Socioeconomic status of individuals were proxi-measured by family income, educational attainments, and job presence. Results from the multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that elderly populations of the lowest family income category were about 3 and 4.6 times more likely to suffer from activity limitations and severe activity limitations, respectively, compared to their high family income counterparts. Disadvantages in activity and severe limitations among the elderly with low educational attainments were also notably high (odds ratios: 2.30 and 4.90, respectively). Further, socioeconomic disadvantage significantly lowered the odds of general health check-ups and physical exercises among the functionally limited elderly Seoul residents. Based on these findings, we suggest that more academic and policy attention should be paid to the socioeconomically disadvantaged elderly urban residents in Korea.
