The purposes of this study were to measure prevalence of low body weight of older adults and to investigate related factors contributing low body weight. Data were obtained from self-administered questionnaire of 8,984 persons, older than 65 years, living in a community. We measured the sociodemographic characteristics, social support, physical health status, physical function, cognition, depression. Univariate, logistic regression analysis were employed to analyze factors affecting on the low body weight. The major study result were as follows. First, prevalence of low weight of older adult was 10.0%(male 9.1%, female 10.7%). The prevalence of low weight was different by demographic characteristics, that is, the rate was higher in the female, more older age, and rural residents. Second, the lower education level, the higher low weight rate. Also there was different by degree of social support. The older adult group who lived with spouse, had good relationship with his/her family and had many intimate friends revealed low prevalence of low body weight. Third, the older adult with severe depressive state revealed higher prevalence of low body weight. Fourth, there was significant difference statistically in the relation physical health and prevalence of low weight. In the case of bad subjective physical health, having more daily activity limitation, more hospitalization experience, more chronic disease and taste change, the prevalence of low weight was high. Fifth, in the results of binary logistic regression, the factors affecting low body weight of older adults was age, subjective physical health, number of chronic disease, taste change, degree of depression and physical function. To promote older adults health and develope program for older adults should consider low body weight, because low body weight was affected by social-culture, psychological, physiological factors.
