The Effects of Family Relationships on Successful Aging of the Elderly Men

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of family relationships including to a spouse, children and grandchildren on successful aging of the elderly men. 329 elderly men over 60 years old and had a spouse, non-cohabitated children and grandchildren were included. Results indicated that consensual solidarity and affectional solidarity with grandchildren, intimacy with spouse, affectional solidarity with children influenced on successful aging of the elderly men. In terms of
sub-dimensions of successful aging, affectional solidarity with grandchildren and intimacy with spouse had influence on ¡®comfortable daily life. ¡®psychosocial well-being¡¯ were influenced by consensual solidarity with grandchildren, affectional solidarity, providing support to children and intimacy with spouse. Received support from children was negative to psychosocial well-being of the elderly men. Consensual solidarity with grandchildren, affectional solidarity with children had influences on ¡®self-efficacy¡¯. These results serve as a foundation for developing the family relationships enhancement program and emphasize the importance of the relationships with grandchildren for the elderly men.
