This study aimed to examine the factors influencing suicidal ideation of the elderly living alone based on eco-system approach. In order to accomplish the study aim, this study first classified important variables into three broad categories including individual, family, and community systems and then proposed intervention strategies useful to prevent suicide among the single elderly. Study results were as follows. First, the study subjects¡¯ overall level of suicidal ideation was relatively high. Second, in terms of personal system factors, it was found that depression score was a significant factor affecting suicidal ideation of the single elderly. In other words, it was found that the more the elderly living alone were depressed, the more they thought about suicide. Third, within the family system factors, the results indicated that the elderly who had children or grandchildren tended to have more suicidal ideation than others. Finally, as a local community system factor, the participation into social activities had positive effect in reducing the elderly¡¯s suicidal ideation. These results suggested that it is necessary to provide systematic programs and services for the single elderly in order to prevent suicide. It is also important to vitalize the opportunities and practical programs for social participation among the single elderly. Lastly, the results of this study implied that the social policies to suicidal prevention for the elderly should move away from overly focusing on individual-level approach and should be directed to multi-dimensional approaches which incorporate individual, family, and community dimensions.
