The Relationship between Stress and Life Satisfaction among the Elderly: The Mediating Effects of Depression, Self-efficiency and Mindfulness

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to observe the mediating role of depression, self-efficiency and mindfulness in the relationship between stress and satisfaction in the lives of old people. A survey comprising assessments on social and population data, stress, depression, self-efficiency, mindfulness and well-being was conducted among 546 old people over 60 who frequent day-care centers for old people within the metropolitan area in and around SPSS WIN15.0 and AMOS 7.0 were used to analyze the results. The main findings of this study are as follow; First, the well-being of old people was negatively correlated with depression and stress, and positively correlated with mindfulness and self-efficiency. Secondly, the study showed the mediating role of mindfulness in the relationship between stress and well-being in the lives of old people. Thirdly, the analysis of the size of the causal relationships between the various factors after separating them in direct and indirect effects showed that stress and depression had a direct effect and an indirect effect on the well-being of old people, while mindfulness had an indirect effect on well-being. Lastly, there were significant differences between males and females regarding the levels of depression and well-being. This study found that the increase of stress and depression in old age by considering how the intervention according to the genders of the elderly care and program development needs.
