The Development of Evidence-based Nursing Practice Guidelines for Dehydration Prevention of the Elderly Living in a Care Facility

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop evidence-based nursing practice guidelines for dehydration prevention of the elderly living in a care facility. This study describes methodological research. First, the topic of the guideline was selected based on the guideline development process of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) (2011), and recommendations were formed after the level of evidence was judged through a systematic review of the literature. Then, a draft of the guidelines was developed after grading of each recommendation. The developed draft guideline was modified and supplemented through the evaluation of experts and pilot-testing before then being confirmed as final guidelines. The guideline consisted of twenty-five recommendations. There were nine recommendations for assessing the risk factor of dehydration, six recommendations for assessing the signs and symptoms of dehydration, three recommendations for acute dehydration management, five recommendations for continuous dehydration prevention, and two recommendations for the promotion of dehydration prevention education. Given the fact that there are no accessible guidelines in spite of the fact that dehydration of the elderly living in care facility is an important issue, these guidelines will effectively promote water intake and prevent dehydration and so will improve the quality of nursing care.
