Procedural discourse is produced and organized in a procedure with each stage executing a specific activity, requiring the ability to convert the order of execution with previously stored procedure knowledge into a language and to be systematically realized. The decline of cognitive linguistic ability in accordance with the normal aging process may affect the production of procedural discourse, which organizes and presents information. In this study, procedural discourse between 42 normal elderly people(mean age=75.19) and 42 young people(mean age=19.02) was produced and its production ability was examined from the subject statement, correct information unit, and individual procedural stage. As an analysis result, firstly there were no differences in the length of discourse, but the elderly group showed a significantly low production ability in the ratio of the subject statement. Secondly, there were no differences in the number of total phases, but the elderly group showed a significantly low production ability in the ratio of correct information unit.
Thirdly, the elderly group showed a significantly low production ability for the production of the essential steps, which is the most important information in stating the procedure, and also showed more production from the off topic remarks, self-corrections, and sequential errors in comparison with the young group. These results suggest that the aging process may cause lowering cohesion of information communication and efficiency and an ability to construct and to produce discourse systematically.
