Ageism and Perceptions on Intergenerational Conflict: The Interaction Effects of Media Portrayal of Elderly Discrimination and Media Usage Time

Abstract
This study examined the effect of ageism on perceptions on intergenerational conflict, and the interaction effects of media portrayal of elderly discrimination and media usage time in their relationship, in recognition of the importance of media in establishing v alues and beliefs as the change to a digital-based untact soceity is accelerating due to COVID-19. The data from ¡®Survey on Age Integration and Generational Integration¡¯ conducted by SSK (Social Sciences Korea) was applied to analyze a total of 833 study participants aged 20-64.
Two-way interaction effect of media portrayal of elderly discrimination and three-way interaction effect of media usage time was investigated using hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and simple slopes test was followed to interpret the interaction effects. The results show ageism and media stereotyping as significant variables on intergenerational conflict, and two-way interaction effect of media portrayal of elderly discrimination and three-way interaction effect of media usage time was significant. Therefore, the effect of ageism on intergenerational conflict was accelerated when participants experienced more media portrayal of elderly discrimination, and this relationship was increased by higher media usage time. Based on the results of the study, practical and political measures to produce positive elderly image in media were discussed.
