The Use of Psychotropic Drugs by middle and High School Pupils in Korea

Abstract

|
During May and June 1970 questionnaires containing items relating to use of psychotropic drugs(narcotic and non narcotic analgesics, hypnotics, tranquilizers, stimulants, hallucinogens) and tobacco were distributed to 6,000 middle and high school students in Seoul.
The response exceeded 95 per cent of the responders, approximately 49 per cent reported they had used stimulants. The majority stated they had employed them to combat sleepiness and allow them to study on to improve athletic performance.Non narcotic analgesics were well second in incidence of use.About 28 per cent of the sample surveyed reported use of these drugs In order of descending use were tranquilizers(5%), tobacco(4%) and hypnotics(4%). Oniy 52 students(0.4%) reported they had employed on hallucinogen,in this case L.S.D.
