Effect of Gymnema sylvestre on the Blood Glucose Levels in the Diabetic Patients

Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is the disease known for longtime and in spite of many scholars have been continued to make steady effort to clarify the its developing mechanisms and its fundamental therapeutic method, it failed and its attack rate increases. Today, the universal applying therapeutic agents for diabetic mellitus are insulin and sulfonylureas and this agents are not the fundamental treatment but the compensational method of the functional insulin deficiency by insulin supply or promoting insulin secretion.
It was more than 3,000 years ago that Gymnema sylvestre, indigenous to certain reguions of the tropical and subtropical countries, began to be used as a popular folk medicine amoung the native population in India order to prevent and threat the obesity and diabetic mellitus and it still is continued to today in India. The leaves of this plant have a selective inhibitory action of the reception of sweet taste of the tongue and a selective suppressive effect against the intestinal glucose absorption.
In this study, the author have the purpose that investigate the change of blood glucose concentration and weight loss in the diabetic patients.
Results obtained were as follows:
1. Extracts from the dried leaves of the Gymnema sylvestre could dignificantly suppressed the elevation of blood glucose concentrations in the diabetic patients.
2. It is suggested that extracts from the dried leaves of the Gymnema sylvestre have a synergistic effect on blood glucose concentrations with oral hypoglycemic agents in the diabetic patients.
3. Extracts from the dried leaves of the Gymnema sylvestre had effect on the weight loss in the diabetic patients.
The results suggest that gymnemic acid has an suppressive effect on the blood glucose concentration and weight loss in the diabetic patients. This fact would be the advantage of the Gymnema sylvestre in application to the therapy or prevention of diabetes mellitus and obesity.
