Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed experimental diet, and also were orally administered with yoghurt prepared with aloe vera (Aloe barbadesis Miller) for 5 weeks. Effects of 0.25% and 0.75% aloe-added yoghurts on body weight gain, food and energy intakes, triglyceride and body fat levels, total and LDL-cholesterol levels, atherogenic index, hydroxyl radical and malondialdehyde levels, and scavenger enzymes in serum of rats were evaluated. Body weight gain were significantly inhibited about 20-30% by administration of 0.25% and 0.75% aloe-added yoghurt compared with control group (p<0.001) Decreases of food and energy intakes showed a similar trend to their body weight gains. Serum triglyceride and body fat contents significantly decreased in 20-35% and 45-50%, respectively in aloe-added Yoghurt groups(p<0.001). 0.75% aloe-added yoghurt only resulted in a significant decreases of about 20% in total cholesterol levels and 15% in atherogenic index. LDL-cholesterol levels in serum were significantly decreased in 15-30% in aloe-added yoghurt groups(p<0.01-0.001). Hydroxhl radical and malondialdehyde levels in serum significantly inhibited in about 30% and 10-20%, respectively. Superoxide dismutase activity as a scavenger enzyme on free radical slight increased above 10% in aloe-added yoghurt groups. Cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio used as a index of aging process significantly inhibited in 20-30% in aloe-added yoghurt groups. These results suggest that administration of aloe-added yoghurts not only can effectively inhibit obesity, but also can intervent chronic degenerative disease and aging process.
