Abstract
The nutritional and immune status of grandmother group of college students mostly residing at urban area was compared with those of elderly women at rural area of a remote place whose dietary intakes were very much lower. Dietary food records, anthropometric measurement, and biochemical assessments of was assessed by the measurement of cytokine(IL-2, IL-6)production by PBMC with mitogen in vitro. The results of this study were summarized as follows; First, elderly women who reside in rural area with big farming load showed relatively lower dietary intakes of total energy, protein, and iron compared to those of grandmothers of college students. The serum protein and zinc concentrations of rural elderly women showed significantly lower level than that of grandmother group, however no one was fell into zinc deficiency category. Secondly, the capacity of in vitro IL-2 production by PBMC with mitogen was significantly higher in grandmother group of college students in urban area than that of rural elderly women. Most subjects of present study showed reasonable responses of in vitro IL-6 production by PBMC, though there was a remarkable individual variations among subjects. Finally there was a positive correlations between the capacity of IL 6 production (without serum) and the serum albumin levels in urban elderlies. The serum ferritin level was also positively correlated with IL-2 production in rural elderlies. Consequently, it could be conclude that the capacity of in vitro IL-2 and IL-6 production by PBMC of elderly women was relatively well preserved in most subjects. It may also be suggested that the optimal dietary restriction with physical activity may act favorably to the preservation of immune functions in elderlies.
