Abstract
In order to study the characteristics of senescence-accelerated mouse, SAMRl & SAMP8, we investigated the physiological parameters such as body weight, organ weight and behaviors at 3, 5, 7 and 13 months of age. In addition to their physiological characteristics, the alterations in antioxidant systems in kidney was also studied For the antioxidant systems, the level of lipid peroxidation, protein-bound -SH and glu-tathione (GSH) content and the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were biochemically analyzed. According to the results, body weights of male SAMRl and SAMP8 were increased with normal growth rate until 9 month. However, the reduction in body weight of SAMP8 has been noticed from 10 months of age. In general, there was less in brain weight and hypophysis weight compared to SAMRl¡¯s. Data also revealed a dystrophy of thymus gland in male SAMP8 and ovary of both strains. From the biochemical analysis, it was formed that there was no significant changes in antioxidant enzyme systems except SOD activity. Interestingly, the sex and strain specificity in catalase activity was found from the present study. For the behavioral study, passive and active avoidance task were performed to characterize the memory capacity of animals. Although it was found that there was NO significant difference in passive avoidance test between SAMRl and SAMP8, there was significant high response of SAMRl in active avoidance test at 5 months of age. The present investigation represent significant differences in both growth and memory capacity between SAMRl and SAMP8 with NO significancy of antioxidant system between two strains.
