This study was performed to elucidate the effect of aging and dietary restriction on free radical generation, GSH level and GSH/GSSG ratio in rat testis. Free radical generation, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance(TBARS), GSH and GSH/GSSG were assayed in 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of age which were ad-libitum fed or diet-restricted. Free radical generation and TBARS increased, but GSH level and GSH/GSSG ration decreased with age ad-libitum group. However, in diet-restricted group, Free radical generation and TBARS were maintained lower than 6 months of ad-libitum, and GSH and GSH/GSSG ration were higher than that of ad-libitum. These results suggest that dietary restriction might maintain the reproductive ability by reducing free radical tree radical generation and lipid peroxidation and maintaining the GSH level in rat testis.
