Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the effects of dietary xylooligosaccharides on the changes in light micrographs of the small intestine as well as disaccharidase activities in rats fed on a high cholesterol diet. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100¡¾10 g were randomly divided into the following group one on normal diet, and four on a high cholesterol diet containing 1% cholesterol. The high cholesterol(1%) diet groups were classified into the following groups those on a xyloolitgosacchride free diet(CXO group), 5% xylooligosaccharide diet(C5XO group), 10% xylooligosaccharide diet(C10XO group) and 15% xylooligosaccharide diet(C15XO group) according to the levels of dietary xylooligosaccharide supplementation. The experimental diets were fed ad libitum for 4 weeks. Dietary xylooligosaccharides increased food intake and decreased food efficiency. Blood glucose level and activity of three intestinal enzymes such as maltase, lactase and sucrase in three xylooligosaccharide supplemented groups were significantly lower than those of normal and CXO groups. Histology in small intestine revealed that the structures of intestine revealed that the structures of intestinal villi in xylooligosaccharide supplemented groups were preserved well, compared to the CXO group. Therefore, it can be stated that dietary xylooligosaccharide supplementation plays an important role in various favorable changes in weight reduction, changes in the morphology of the small intestine, as well as changes in the serum glucose level and inhibition of disaccharidase activities in the small intestine. These results indicated that dietary xylooligosaccharides may act as a potential substitute for a dietary fibers being able to exercise hypoglycemic action as well as improve gastrointestinal function.
