Abstract

|
In this paper the author reviewed the meaning and role of support in psychoanalysis and described the techniques of supportive psychotherapy. The author argues that there is no psychotherapy without supportive factor and that supportive factor has great curative power of psychotherapy. Psychotherapists can find the original figure of support in the mother-child relationship. As a psychological mother, the psychotherapist permits the patient holding environment by using support. The psychotherapist as a new object could help the patient modify the original infantile internal object. Interpretation helps the patient gain insight by using ego observation but the experience of support helps the patient modify the internal object. In general, the patient experiences psychoanalytic support in the form of nonverbal communication but in supportive psychotherapy, support takes verbal forms such as persuasion, reassurance, encouragement raising self esteem etc.
