Holding Environment
Bahn Geon-Ho

Abstract
Holding or a holding environment is an essential part of the maturation of infants. To be a good holding environment, the baby¡¯s needs must be provided for more or less at the right time and at the right place. This can be accomplished through a mother¡¯s love and her close observation. The concept of a holding environment might arise from the clinical experiences of pediatrician and child psychoanalyst as well as the experiences of clinical consultant while helping children evacuated during and after the Second World War. In the past, Winnicott used the term "holding environment" to describe the concept of a "good-enough" mother. Currently, the limitations on the regularity of visits, rituals of coming and going, and the very continuity of the objects, space, and couch are almost the same as those of the holding environment. Therefore, a holding environment is somewhat representative of a psychoanalytic situation, and it also refers to having a supportive and receptive environment in everyday life
