Abstract
Altruism is the most important element of professionalism. The trust in doctor-patient relationship as an altruistic healer, requires the physician to serve the interests of the patient above self-interest. Recently the needs of the medical ethics are increased, but there are still not enough room to provide in the curriculum.
Three cases are suggested to discuss about the altruism and its obstacles. This paper approaches to the persistence of altruism with definition of professionalism; concept of altruism in the professionalism; means for school directors to inculcate the concepts of professionalism within their coursework; and strategies for government to augment the altruism of students during training.
Demands and costs of the medical service are usually regulated by the government. The service is treated as a public goods, so there are frequent dispute with physicians association. Benchmarking the success of Escuela Latinoamericana de medicina in Cuba, the full support for students seems to potentiate the altruism by coupling with the willingness of paying foreword. We are suggesting an alternative system of medical education as a public goods against the huge wave of commercialism and drifting policy on the national universities in Korea.
