Relationship between traffic condition of living area and prevalence of cerebrovascular disease

Abstract
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between the traffic condition of residential area (number of lanes, LNR) and the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease.

Materials and Methods: As a part of the study of "Evaluating exposure to environmental pollutants and health effects on residents living near a industrial area in Cheongju" from 2012 to 2015, totally 5,525 residents in the industrial area and the control area were included in this study. We collected informations such as demographic characteristics, lifestyle, residence and cerebrovascular disease history by questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 24.0.

Results: Prevalence of cerebrovascular disease including stroke was found to significantly increase depending on LNR and traffic volume in the residential area increased. Especially, this tendency was more prominent in industrial area. In logistic regression analysis, it was confirmed that the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease was influenced by age, gender, education level, hypertension history, and the number of adjacent lanes in the residential area.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that as people living near more laned road or having high traffic volume are more likely to be exposed to noise and particulate matter, so that incidence of cerebrovascular disease may be increased. It suggests that they need more active efforts to avoid car exhaust particles and noise.
