Development of speech aid app for patients with dysarthria
Lee Kyoung-Moo

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a smartphone-based speech augmentative and assistive application for patients with severe dysarthria.

Methods: We developed an android phone based speech augmentative and assistive device application on android 7.1.1 OS, using the MIT App Inventor 2 development tool. This application could be used to input sentences via a smartphone keyboard. After writing the sentence, the patient can then push the speak button for an audible production from the smartphone speaker. We also added buttons to register frequently used sentences. A sentence prediction function is in-built with Samsung experience 8.5 OS.

Results: The developed speech augmentative and assistive application functions as an input route for speech production. This appliction also has a sentence prediction function to improve keyboard input. This application can be useful to patients with severe dysarthria. Patients with cerebral palsy can ues this application in their everyday life, especially in the workplace. The frequently used sentence buttons can also be very helpful to patients. We found that patients who did not work, did not use this application very often as they could manage to communicate with their family even if they had severe dysarthria. It therefore appears that the motivation of the patients is very important for the utility of such apps.

Conclusions: We developed a smartphone-based speech augmentative and assistive application for patients with severe dysarthria. This speech augmentative and assistive application could help improve communication in such patients.
