Abstract
Objective :
@EN Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been still recognized as a major medical problem affecting considerable proportion of the world's population at all ages, especially in infants, young children and adolescents. With the use of concentration of
concentration of hemoglobin and red cell indices and red cell distribution width concurrently in association with the iron batterry, we analyse the hematol9ogic profiles of children with iron deficiency anemia, comparing them with normal control.
@ES Subjects and method:
@EN From March 1991 to August 1995, infants and children aged 4 months to 15 years who had been brought to Inha General Hospital on Seongnam city were investigated for the evidence of iron deficiency. Infants with hemoglobin level < 11 gm/dl and
who had
ferritin < 10§¶/L or transferrin staturation < 15% were classified having IDA.
@ES Results:
@EN Out of 357 children (M:F=1.83:1) with IDA, 75.1%(n=168) was under 2 years of age, and 12.0%(n=43) was 2 years of age. The main causes which they were brought to the clinic were infectious or inflammatory illnesses, and only 36 cases(10.1%)
with
IDA
were visited for evaluation of pallor or anemia. There were significant differences in MCV, RDW, serum ferritin and transferrin saturation between anemia group and control group. Among 103 patients with IDA interviewed, only half had good
compliance
according to the prescription.
@ES conclusion:
@EN By combining the hemoglobin with MCV and RDW as well as iron batteries in screeniong for iron deficiency, the accuaracy of diagnosis is able to be increased. It is urgent to inform to the public our knowledge about the relationship between
diet
and
iron nutrition not only in treating children with IDA but also in preventing them.
