A Case of Malignant Schwannoma of the Parapharyngeal Space

Abstract
Malignant schwannoma, a highly aggressive neoplasm of nerve sheath origin is a quite rare tumor of the head and neck, and accurate diagnosis and therapy is frequently delayed. Most of these tumors occur as a neck mass and frequently related with
von
recklinghausen's disease. Accurated diagnosis is best accomplished by performing excisinal biopsy.
Wide excision with or without adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy is mainstay of treatment but routine lymphadenectomy is not recommended.
Patient prognosis is best correlated with histologic grade of tumor and failure generally associated with an unacceptably high local recurrence rate and it should be considered for aggressive re-excision.
We experienced a cases of malignant schwannoma of parapharyngeal space originated from the vagus nerve. So we report the case and the literature pertaining to malignant schwnoma of head.
