Intravenous Clonidine Effects on Blood Pressure, Heart Rate and Intraocular Pressure for Ophthalmic Surgery in the Elderly

Abstract
Background:
@EN Clonidine may prevent the elevation of blood pressure, heart rate and reduce intraocular pressure accompanying tracheal intubation. We studied that intravenous clonidine pretreatment effects on hemodynmic response and intraocular pressure
when
succinylcholine administrationand tracheal intubation for elective ophthalmic surgery in the elderly patients under general anesthesia.
@ES Methods:
@EN Forty patients undergoing elective cataract surgery were randomly divided into two groups. The control group(n=21) received 1ml of 0.9% normal saline intravenously 10 minutes before induction of anesthesia. The clonidine group(n=19) received
clonidine 2.5 §¶/kg intravenously at the same time.
@ES Results:
@EN Mean arterial pressure and heart rate 1 minute after intubation were significantly increased compared with values before intubationin bothgrops but significantly low in clonidine group compared with control group. There were no significant
differences in incidence of bradycardia and hypotension between two groups. Intraocular pressure were significantly reduced compared with baseline value 5 minutes after intravenous clonidine. After the tracheal intubation, intraocular pressure
were
significantly increased compared with before intubation in both groups, but not significant changed compared with baseline values.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN Intravenous injection of clonidine 2.5§¶/kg 10 minutes before induction of general anesthesia did not prevent elevation of mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and intraocular pressure accompanied to tracheal intubation.
