A Study on the Transformational, Transactional Leadership styles and Ego States of Clinical Nurses in Hospital


Abstract
Purpose: It was to identify the relationship between leadership style and TA ego states and to provide the basic data for developing stategies of transformational, transactional leadership study of Bass¢¥s(1985) model. Method: The subjects were 222 clinical nurses were working at a general hospital in Seoul. The data collected from Nov. 8 to Nov. 22, 2002 by the structrured questionnaires. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, ANOVA, and simple regression with SPSSwin 10.0 were used. Result: (1)The subjects was the N pattern in NP score of the top egogram. The order of egostate¢¥s score were NP, CP, A, FC, and AC. In the function of each ego state¢¥s score, the positive function¢¥s score were higher than the negative of A, FC, and AC. But the negative function¢¥s score were higher than the positive in CP and NP. (2) The score of transformational leadership perceived by subjects was higher than the transacional leadership. Among 5 subdimensions of the leadership styles, the order of score were charisma, management by exception, intellectual stimulation, individual consideration, and contingent reward. (3) The contingent reward was significant difference by CP in the top egogram. (4) There were a significant relationship CP, NP, FC and all leadership styles r=.14 .37. But A(adult) ego state was not a significant relationship in management by exception of transactional leadership, and AC ego state was not a significant relationship in individualized consideration of transformational leadership. Conclusion: Perceived leadership styles were differenced by ego states. Therefore, it is required to improve the effect the leadership considering the staffs personality by ego states.
