Abstract
Most vascular tumors in extremities are benign and localized, but difficulty in complete excision and more frequent recurrences have been reported when the lesion is in deeper portion and larger in size. We pathologically classified and surgically treated 47 cases of vascular tumors on extremities between January, 1989 and April, 1996 at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Korea University Hospital and conducted follow-up study for recurrences and complications for an average 3 years and 6 months postoperative. The results were as follows: 1. One case of recurrence and 3 cases of mild complications such as median nerve injury, compartment syndrome and delayed wound healing developed in 47 cases of hemangiomas postoperative; 3 cases of large hemangiomas were preoperatively treated with embolization and then, those cases were then easily treated with complete excision. 2. There was no recurrence and complication in 3 cases of glomus tumors. 3. There was no recurrence in 3 cases of lymphangiomas. As the above results show, surgical excision is probably the most recommendable method in the treatment of vascular tumors, even though minor complications and recurrences can still be expected, and embolization may be a supplementary method in the treatment of large vascular tumors. It is our opinion that the ultimate choice of treatments in any case must be a balance between a knowledge of the natural history of the lesions and consideration of the patient¢¥s wishes. It is also important that patients should be informed of the distinct possibility that recurrences may follow excision.
