The Effects of Child Abuse and Psychosocial Resources on Depressive Symptoms -The Mediating Role of Psychosocial Resources
Jeon Hae-Sook

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the associations among child abuse, psychosocial resources, and depressive symptoms based on the stress process model. In particular, the study investigated (1) the direct impact of child abuse and psychosocial resources on depressive symptoms and (2) the mediating role of psychosocial resources in the relationships between child abuse and depressive symptoms. The third year dataset of Seoul Panel Study of Children was used. The sample consisted of 1,546 elementary school students who were in the 6th grade. The data were analysed through Structural Equational Modeling Analysis using AMOS 5. The findings showed that there were significant associations among child abuse, depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and social relationship. In terms of the mediating role of psychosocial resources, negative self-esteem and social relationship with friends mediated the associations between child abuse and depressive symptoms. Based on the findings, the implications for social work practice were discussed.
