A Meta-Analysis on the Effect of Family Intervention Programs for The Mentally Ill
Lee Kyung-Hee

Bae Sung-Woo
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to conduct a meta analysis on the effect of the family intervention programs in order to synthesize the existing literature and thereby obtain the scientific data. The research questions of this study were as follows. First, what is the average effect size of family intervention programs conducted in Korea? Second, what are the moderate variables that affect the overall effect sizes? For data analysis, we collected data from academic journals, theses, and dissertations published up to April 2009 and, as a result, a total of 20 studies were selected for the final analysis. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis(CMA) software 2.0 was used for the data analysis. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, the average effect size of the interventions was larger than .66 for the all the outcomes examined in the study. Second, it was found that effect sizes are influenced by moderate variables. More specifically, it was found that 1) the length of service was a significant moderator. While short-term education is more effective for increasing family¡¯s knowledge for the illness, long-term education is better for family¡¯s mental health outcome, 2) the provision of additional clinical services was not significantly related with effect size, 3) the inclusion of the patients in the program was effective for increasing family¡¯s knowledge for the illness but it was not related with family¡¯s mental health outcome, 4) in terms of investigating clients¡¯ outcome, it was difficult to calculate overall effect size because the number of study examining clients¡¯ outcome was very limited and the dependent variables utilized in each study were also varied. Finally several research and practice implications from this study were also discussed.
