Abstract
Using Berry (2006b)` s ``Transactional model of stress and coping``, this study examines the relationships of coping to acculturative stress and depression among Korean American university students. The study design involves a cross-sectional survey using a convenient sampling method. A sample of 432 Koreans American undergraduates residing in Los Angeles area completed the survey questionaire. Multiple regression analysis suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986) were employed to examine the relationships and the mediating effects of key variables. The result shows that emotion-oriented coping moderated the acculturative stress-depression relationship. Thus it shows that vulnerability toward depression is increased for Korean American University students who report societal, attitudinal, familial and environmental acculturative stress accompanied by high emotion-oriented coping Given the results of the study, these culturally relevant factors and cognitive behavioral factors should be included in protocol for depression risk assessment in behalf of ethnocultural groups in the university. Also, mental health programmes should include measures to encourage university students to adopt active coping strategies to make interventions effective in reducing depression level.
