In this research, we explored the goal-setting process of people with schizophrenia for recovery. To do so, we conducted in-depth interviews with 15 schizophrenics using social rehabilitation centers based on the grounded theory method. As a result, we were able to identify 13 categories, 21 sub-categories and 97 concepts. In the conceptual framework of the goal-setting process for the recovery of schizophrenics, the central phenomenon turned out to be ¡®I want to have a goal that suits me.¡¯ The central phenomenon was influenced by the causal condition of ¡®I desire to pursue what I want to realize¡¯ and the contextual conditions of ¡®I am not physically strong enough¡¯ and ¡®I do not have sufficient education.¡¯ The action-interaction strategies are ¡®try to achieve one by one¡¯, ¡®start trying a small task first¡¯, and ¡®prioritize tasks¡¯, which is affected by the intervening conditions of ¡®I want to vent my spite¡¯, ¡®I feel secure because my family give me their support¡¯ and ¡®I participate in programs¡¯. The action-interaction strategies led to three results: ¡®I became more confident¡¯, ¡®I feel happy¡¯ and ¡®My health is improving¡¯. People with schizophrenia felt recovered in the process of finding their goal.
Since this is the very first research on the goal-setting process of schizophrenics in Korea, we expect this research to have significant implications for policy and clinical interventions in the country.
