A Phenomenological Study on the Empowerment of Mentally Disabled People who Participated in Culture and Arts Educational Activities in Communities - Discovering Myself Through the Humanities and Opening the Door to My Own Way of Living

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the very nature of empowerment from a phenomenological perspective, which mentally disabled people experienced through culture and arts education activities provided in their communities. Participants of this study were 10 mentally disabled persons who had experienced culture and arts education activities that were provided by S Social Rehabilitation Center from 2012 to 2015. The study conducted profound and individual interviews of those person, from which their self-reports of the experiences were obtained, and analyzed. Based on its findings, this study reached a conclusion that more supports should be provided to rehabilitate mentally disabled people and help them become more capable to change their life and live a healthy life in their communities. In association, the study stressed that community activities which provide the public with opportunities to have more positive contacts with and more positively recognize the mentally disabled.
