Ascending Pathway of SCI-induced Mechanical Allodynia in a Rat Model

|
Spinal cord injury (SCI) usually leads to chronic central pain such as ongoing and evoked pain. Mechanical allodynia is known to be the one of major symptoms following SCI. To date, the ascending pathways of input signals mediating mechanical allodynia remain uncertain. In the present study, we examined whether the dorsal column (DC) transmitted the signals of mechanical allodynia following SCI. Twenty-nine male Sprague-Dawley (150-200 g) rats were used in this study. All animals were subjected to hemisection of the spinal cord at the level of T13. Two weeks after the hemisection, 17 animals (experimental group) were subjected to the contralateral DC lesion at the level of T10 and the remaining 12 animals were subjected to sham section. Behavioral tests for mechanical allodynia was performed by using a von Frey hair (19.6 mN, 2 g) applied to the hindlimbs and tail. The magnitude of mechanical allodynia signs following contralateral DC lesion after the spinal cord hemisection was not statistically different from that of the sham group. These results suggest that the signals of mechanical allodynia following SCI may not be transmitted via DC pathway.
