The presence of plaques on the inner layer of the arteries wall is known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic plaques can become hardened by the calcium deposition, and fibrous tissue may proliferate in the walls. This leads to arteriosclerosis. Textbook describes 3 categories of arteriosclerosis: atherosclerosis, M?nckeberg medial calcific sclerosis, and arteriolosclerosis. Vascualr aging is not included among these categories. Among risk factors of atherosclerosis aging is the strongest one. Thus vascular aging is often confused with atherosclerosis. There is no appropriate pathological term for vascular aging. In a narrow sense, arteriosclerosis is different from vascular aging because atherosclerosis includes some components of pathologic aging. But physiologic aging and pathological aging can not actually distinguish clearly. Therefore, from the perspective of the aging, arteriosclerosis is included in the vascular aging. It remains more research results to define the vascular aging.
